Monster Energy Kawasaki Race Report

I guess I can start off by saying this race just wasn't in the cards for us! It just wasn't good from the beginning, We showed up to staging on time and ready to go. Hanging out in the back of the group because we knew we were one of the last ones to go off the line. Next thing we realize BITD lines us up after two sportsman UTVs. Try talking to them but they don't understand what we are trying to tell them. Oh well we start knowing we will have to pass a couple of cars. Right before the start line the one of the RZR 4 stop and jump out of the car. We pull around them and now take the green light.
We Start side by side with the 1905 Rhino and not 100 yards past the start line the car shifts into neutral. In all the moving around before the race I Didn't have the car fully engaged in High. Stop slam it into gear and were racing again. We come out right behind the 1905 and get to pass them on the first option line. Next up is a Sportsman Rhino to pass. We pass them just pulling onto the paved road and hit the gas trying to catch the others. Around mile 9 the dust was so bad we couldn't see anything. We managed to just get off the track and thank goodness the dust cleared because when it did there was a checkpoint worker parked only 5' from the course. We slammed the brakes and just missed him. Shortly after that we saw the Jagged X team stopped on the side of the road. Our car was running great! The Muzzy's motor and XMF long travel and Walker Evans shocks were working great! We continued to pick off cars and finished the first lap moving into the fourth spot. We passed the silver rhino in the pits wile they were stopped and we were right on the Murry's bumper.
Just after the OK to pass sign exiting the Main pit we passed Murry. (Sorry about the tap) This put us physically in second and we were 3 minutes behind them on the course. Our pit crew said we were only a minute behind them on corrected time. We charged hard on the second lap trying to make up more time no that we had some clear air and could see where we were going. Just before pit two our crew comes over the radio and tells us that Jerome is only a minute ahead of us physically. This means we are ahead of him on corrected time. We stop in pit 2 for a splash of fuel knowing that we were gonna have to do three laps and couldn't make it all the way on one tank. When we pulled into the pits and stopped the car died. We were not able to get it refired and had to have it towed back to the main pit.

I want to say thank you to Wally World, Paul, Mike V, Randy Clary, and Lucas Hand for all their help this weekend. I couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks to our sponsors who have supported us through this rough season. Monster Energy, Kawasaki, GBC Motorsports, Walker Evans, XMF, Muzzys, K&N, Sommers Bros, Billet King, Pro Armor, Hostyle and UTV Underground.

I want to say Thanks to Mike Lasher for the opportunity to co-dog in his Teryx again.

Mike is a class act and always goes above and beyond when it comes to racing. He is an outstanding driver and ran flawlessly to quickly push the car towards the front of the pack.

It's a shame that we had problems that kept us from finishing but I'm sure we'll get them worked out and Lasher Motorsports will be on the podium soon.

I also want to say thanks to Wally, Mike Valentine, Lucas hand, and Randy for the pit support.

Congrats to everyone. It was a fun race.

I am all for Jerome winning, just wish we could make some rules clear. I do believe that BITD is one of the elite racing organizations. The money we pay to race with them and having UTVRA, would make you believe that we have set rules and the rules should never be changed bc of one event. I do believe that there are two parts to desert racing, strategy and speed. Sometimes speed isnt the only thing you need. There was a set of rules in place to start the race and those rules should be enforced after the race. These rules and outcomes effect the season endings points championships for a few teams. I am not in the points championship, and do not think I should have a say in a protest or an outcome. My team, including numerous of other teams, talked about stopping before the finish line for making the race a bit shorter without the risk of a ton of cars and overall time not changing the results. Hopefully we can get this cleared up for next year....

I would also like it to be know, that these events were brought to light during the mandatory drivers meeting....

Congrats to all who participated. I want to congratulate Justin for his second place finish. With all the talk of class rule changes and how to get more racers out there, I took matters into my own hands and sponsored someone. He let my brother ride with him for the race and it was my bro's first desert race. What a ride!! He still can't hear anything because that car is loud but he had a great time.

Well, my Teryx was still not done for this race. It has been at DASA two weeks for a dyno and exhaust and it is still not done. They did not get the exhaust done and hit the dyno until last Friday (tech day) so thursday morning I started a desert prep on a car I have only had for less than two weeks and only 20min driving time. We had a lot of work to do as there were no passenger seatbelts, the drivers belt was outdated, no passenger window net, no radio, intercom, spare tire, amber or blue lights, etc etc etc.

We started thursday and worked till midnight. We headed for Henderson at 9:30am and bought new seatbelts, wired and mounted all the amber and blue lights etc etc etc, and finished all the tech stuff to make tech at about 5:00pm.

We almost landed a sponsor with General Tire but we decided not to run the tires because they would rub when we hit a g-out.

That night we noticed the top shock seal above the shock body on the right rear shock was weeping oil. The shock was only wet about 1" down the shock body and we tried to tighten it up but no luck. We decided we would have to go with it as I have all the shock rebuild kits and tools for King shocks in the trailer but nothing for Bilstein shocks like this car has.

The next morning we joined all the other racers crapping their pants as the pits took much longer to find than anticipated. At about 5:30 we rolled the rhino out of the trailer and tried to fire it up as we pumped up the compressor for one final tire pressure check. We cranked the rhino once and then it stopped cranking. The motor has no decompression pin and the engine is a 790 with 12.5:1 compression. The sylenoid fried as we were about to race. We grabbed the jump box (the one I let my wife borrow last week and she spilled a gallon of water in the back of the van right on it) and it was totally dead. That thing is never totally dead and I know I plugged it in but when it did not work, all I could think about was the water. After getting some jumper cables from a nearby competitor, we bypassed the sylenoid and fired it up. Feeling late nad nervous, we never put the new batteries and SD card into the camera mounted on our hood. My Dad was my co pilot and my brother Dustin was looking for Justin. I told him to go to the start line and find him at staging.

We finally got strapped in and made it to the start line at about 6:10. Right after I pulled up I told my dad to relax for a minute before the race. Right then a bike racer rode up and said "your crap is on fire!" I said WHAT and he repeated. Knowing if I turned off the car it would not start I ripped off my belts to look back at the car. I was wearing a new R3 neck restraint and I could not look back without taking off the belts. When I got turned around I saw a roll of paper towels laying on the exhaust by the passenger side. I am sure it was from the team removing the glue under stickers to put our race numbers on. I jumped out and pulled the paper towels out. I quickly stomped them out and in the mean time all the others around had my fire extinguishers out and ready. Luckily there was no more drauma.

I jumped back in the car as the quads were almost done leaving. My dad told me to relax before the race as I buckled back in. It was a good time for a joke. We pulled up about 10 seconds before we got the green light and we were off. Since it was the first time I every drove this car, I decided to take it easy and try not to blow the short course 790 motor. The car and shocks handled amazingly well and after getting passed a couple times I was at about mile 30 when I noticed that if I held the gas pedal down really hard on the floor and went over a couple bumps, then the motor would pull about 25% more power. The throttle cable was sticking and the only way to get the carb to open was to mash the gas and hit a couple bumps. Now we were off. We passed two or three cars in the whoops before the main pit. When we came in for gas my team said we were physically in fourth place which I was happy with since we started 8th. We left the pit on a mission to chase down the leader. Suposedly we were only about 2-3 minutes back. At mile 2, we passed a big pile of trash on the right side of the road. Shortly after that we pulled over with the rest of the guys changing flat tires. My right rear had a sidewall puncture over an inch long. It could have been because of the trash or because the shock had leaked all the oil out and let the right rear bottom out. We will never know. What I did know was that I had to keep the car running. I changed the flat while my dad sat in the drivers seat just to make sure it did not die. After a flat change, we were off again. About two miles after that I heard a big WHACK and my right leg felt like I had just been hit with a baseball bat inside my right thigh. The day before I had installed the passenger seatbelt and a team member had done the drivers belt. They had left the extra belt hanging down next to the clutch and the clutch finally grabbed it. My new 3" Mastercraft seatbelt was ripped in half across my thigh. When that happened I immediately pulled over to see what happened. The belt was stuck in the clutch which prohibited it from disengaging and the motor died. Once I realized that I was ok, we called for pit help and about 20 min later BITD support gave us a jump. It was useless as the clutch was stuck. We were only about .25 mile from the spectator area #1 so we were towed in and called it a day.

Overall it was a really fun race. I am picking up my Teryx this weekend so we should be ready for the first race in January. Overall the rhino did well given the circumstances and as expected, we fell prey to the last minute stuff that we just did not have time to complete.

I was really happy to find Justin at the finish line when we arrived and we hope to be racing together again next season. If you are wondering how to promote the sport, sponsor someone for a race. It makes things twice as fun and makes the field bigger.

I am not in the points championship, and do not think I should have a say in a protest or an outcome. My team, including numerous of other teams, talked about stopping before the finish line for making the race a bit shorter without the risk of a ton of cars and overall time not changing the results. Hopefully we can get this cleared up for next year....

I agree 100%. The fact that you are not protesting it as you are not in the final points race is honorable. The rule does not affect me this year but as we are running the whole season next year, I sure hope they follow the rules they print. We left our last sanctioning body for a more professional one and sticking to the rules is what we are looking for. In desert racing we don't see this issue too often but in rally racing, knowing the rules is half the battle. I hope they will correct this before next year.

Unfortunately we talking about quite a bit cash difference in the end. Its not about me putting cash in my pocket, its more less about me being able to afford another race out of the payout. Hopefully, I can stay on the podium and keep getting money back which will allow me to continue to compete. I am fully aware this sport is not for the poor, but I feel that I am able to compete on the higher level....

Murray, I hope second place in points doesnt mean much to you guys

i will say iam pretty sure we started our 3rd lap after 8:45 so i would say mistake 1 and second is the 9:45 if we were averging 1hr and 10min laps it was physically impossible to do all 3 laps by 9:45 because we started off the line around 6:30. I will call casey and find out, but i know that casey was not at the finish line so i would say human error. Because we should of been stopped and not let go. We still beat you and the rest of the field. We never got passed by the dirt bike i know for fact you did.Cheater motor hahaha

I don't think you did start your third lap after 845 only bc I finished my second at 8:47. I also don't buy into the finish times just bc with that said, that would put me starting t 6:25. I do agree you deserve to win, and that is a stupid ass rule. But a rule, is a rule.

so your saying we all should of started at 6:15 to make times legal.Or this should of been a 2 lap race for the utvs only.We should of got a discount because were not able to do all the laps.Generally in bitd for the utvs we get the same time as cars and trucks. That why we start with quads and dirtbikes. So we dont finish so late. So your saying the race ended when we finished our 2 lap or there was no physicall way or time we could of done our third lap in time. 1hr and ten minutes a lap, start at 6:25 ,3 laps put all the utvs at 9:55 to finish the race. not 9:45. So your saying the start time and finsh time was screwed up or that time was for dirt bike and quads.cheater motor lol

In my opinion you can't have a GP finish with a staggered start. A GP race should not have a time limit and it is defined by a group start such as land rush or a rolling start for all participants. None of the races I have ever been in that have a GP finish have a time limit or a staggered start. How do you run a GP finish when someone that starts five minutes later could be turning faster times but not get to start the last lap because a bike got between the UTV's? We should have all been allowed to do the same number of laps, or we should have been timed from the start and everyone allowed to start the third lap if we finished the first two in 2 hours 20 min. The hard part is that I see both sides. As a team we did talk stradegy when it comes to starting the third lap. If we were close and the bikes were right behind us, we would have stopped until the first bike passed even if a UTV passed and started on the third lap because we knew they would not make it to the finish in time. Half of racing is knowing the rules and executing a strategy. After the first lap we knew we could not finish three before the finish line closed. I would have stopped and waited for the checkers no matter what had we finished the second lap strictly because of the time limit on the finish line. The fact that they threw in the time limit that none of the UTV's could have realistically made just caused problems. May the fastest car win, three laps is respectable and I think you had the fastest times for the first two so either way, you should win. Hopefully BITD changes this or at least recognizes the issues this hybrid grand prix system creates. If Justin was in the points race, this could have gotten messy. Had this happened to the trophy trucks what do you think the result would have been? When was the last time NASCAR, RALLY, or any other respectable organization changed the printed rules? We all want to race a fair race and get what we deserve. Hopefully the rules in the future will allow us more clarity because I want to know they will follow the printed rules but I also want the fastest car to win. This was just a bad race design from the beginning and luckily this does not involve two cars that are both in the points champoinship. Unfortunately it does make some changes to the second and third place cars for the championship.

This could have been a bad deal if it had effected the points championship. However the whole GP finish was basically put in place to allow time for the races after us to be allowed time to race. If your going to do a staggered start on a gp finish you should probably do a gp finish in your class, instead of your race. That way if some one thats that far behind the lead car getting his third lap then that person that is behind just starting his third lap would at that point just be happy to get his finish because they're probably having issues of some sort. Congrats to Jerome and the whole team.

let me start out by saying its about time we won a race. This race tested me mentally. I sent the paper work in earlly to get in the lottery which we never do because i forget. But it paid off got to start outside of front row. Well i will start on the sunday before the race when i was testing the car. The motor had a little tick to it in the last straight way. I pulled it in and heard the noise in the top end. So back to the shop to work on it. One of the lifters wasn't pumping up. So let the tear down begin 5 days before the race. I get it all back to geither on wednesday. Go test and re clutch again at my shop. So we head to henderson on friday thinking iam running late to find out we are a 1hr head of vegas. We get tech in and bonus we dont need that stupid IRC. On to saturday morning we line up to the murrays off the line we see them for a second and that was the last utv we seen until our second lap were we seen cory 3 wheeling on the dry lake bed. We had zero problems the first 2 laps and passed 4 dirt bikes and about 6 quads. We were hoping the dirt bike would pass us but he never did when we passed the start finish line. So now we are on our third lap we pull into the pits i have to pee so bad when i get out i see the dirt bike pass the finish line. I now know we are the only team on the third lap. So me and jerome take off we are calling this our victory lap for now. We get to mile 20 when our crew tells us we have tell 9:45 to finish the race. So we hammer down netheir on us our talking to each other because we know its going to be close in time. Iam pissed because i swear i thought we had tell 3:00 to finish. My hole crew was happy my push to talk button was broke. At about mile 37 the rearend has a bad pull we both new it was axle. But we have to make it passed the line and about mile 40 news over the radio came in we had all the time in the world as long as we got to the finish line. So we pulled over passenger rear axle popped out and rear sway bar broke. i get the axle back in and we motor back on. Jerome says the rear end still lose i say get us to the finish line. We finally get there the biggest weight was lifted off my shoulders. We finnally win a race no if and our butts. Then they tell me were murray finishes i finnally get to tell jerome we moved to second in points. I only told him we had a chance at third. I didnt want to put any pressure on him. This has been along time coming i thought we were cursed.I forget to mention the pull that was there the drivers outer rear axle cv blew apart thank god for four wheel drive. I want to thank all of wifes and familys for putting up with so much. Jerome especially for almost 3 years of crap me and you have had to put with. My dad for all the crap i give when iam in race mode. Craig from ATD for being there and helping with us using his car. Jeff my helper/ friend who is there at every race except this one he knows he might be the juju. Ron from kroyer racing for the motors that was were our program need the most help. If it wasn't for that stupid billet crank from CRANK WORKS blowing up we would of had the championship. Toni from full circle auto body for the paint. HPD for the rear end housing. The whole family from jaggedx when we needed parts we got there good hand downs. The tranny and the bottom end saved our season. And jerome i told you we could do it if we stuck to our game plan.

Congrats Rito!! It's about time! I'm glad you stuck it out through all the challenges. Victory is sweet after so many battles. Congrats again.

I called BITD to as about the grand prix scoring for 2011. Casey called me back and said that the Henderson is the only race that we have to grand prix with the bikes due to the very limited use permit granted by the BLM. All the other races we will either finish or grand prix with the UTV's.

As for the henderson race, if you started after 6:15, which all the UTV's did, then the finial time was adjusted based on when you started. Example: If you actually started at 6:30 and finished at 10:00, then the score card would show a 6:15 start and a 9:45 finish. He said to always keep going and he will adjust the rankings as he must based on the average speeds and times. He knows the grand prix with the bikes is frustrating but it is the best he could do at that race.

Casey is a great guy and I am looking forward to the parker race in January.
