2014 SCORE World Desert Championship preparing for next month’s inaugural SCORE Imperial Valley 250 World’s Foremost Desert Racing organization will present its first Southern California event in Imperial Valley, April 24-27, as El Centro area provides tremendous community support; SCORE International celebrating its 41st season;
Imperial Valley Mall in El Centro hosting several race activities

RENO, Nevada—Following nearly two years of extensive planningwith assistance from numerous individuals, multiple businesses and several government agencies from across the entire valley, Round 2 of the five-race 2014 SCORE World Desert Championship will be the inaugural SCORE Imperial Valley 250 to be held April 24-27 just west of El Centro, Calif. and approximately 100 miles east of San Diego.

Presented by the City of El Centro, SCORE’s first race in this portion of Southern California and first SCORE race in California since a 1998 race in Barstow will be held near Plaster City primarily on 41,000 dedicated acres in an off-highway vehicle use area under the jurisdiction of the El Centro field office of the Bureau of Land Management. The area for the race is also located immediately west of the Naval Air Facility El Centro and is approximately 17 miles west of El Centro off of Interstate 8 (I-8).

ON CBS SPORTS SPECTACULAR

The race will be televised on a delayed basis in the USA and Canada as a one-hour special on the CBS Sports Network with the telecast presented by BFGoodrich Tires. The show, being produced by SoCal’s acclaimed BCII TV, will air twice on the CBS Sports Spectacular show with the initial airing at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 15, 2014. Following the CBS Sports Network telecasts, the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 show will air worldwide in nearly 200 countries through international distribution.

SEZ NORMAN

“Without the amazing assistance from the City of El Centro, the area business community as well as the dedicated SCORE Imperial Valley 250 race committee of nearly 70 community leaders, SCORE would not be holding this event, simple as that,†commented Roger Norman, CEO/President of SCORE International which is headquartered in Reno, Nev. “In this sport, there are few major desert races held in OHV areas primarily because of safety concerns.â€

“El Centro and the SCORE Race Committee with invaluable assistance from the Imperial Valley sheriff and police departments have collectively developed an event plan that is compatible with the directives of the BLM. We know that the economic impact of the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 for the area will compare favorably with the most successful events in the history of the area. The goal of SCORE, the City of El Centro and Imperial County is to make this one of the top desert races held annually in the United States.â€

“We want to especially recognize the dream and vision of former SCORE Trophy Truck racer and Terrible’s Cup champion Marty Coyne (El Centro businessman) and the passion and determination of Jeff Sturdevant, chairman of the SCORE Race Committee. Marty has also provided the event the use of his land in the heart of the race course for our start/finish line area, infield section of nearly eight miles, main pits, primary spectator area and vendor village.â€

COMP FORMAT

The SCORE World Desert Championship series features 35 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs with the best desert racers in the world competing in elapsed-times races with staggered starts. Nearly 200 entries from 20 U.S. States and five countries are expected for this race. The classes will be split into two groups for the SCORE Imperial Valley 250.

The Motorcycle, ATV and a few of the slower car/truck classes will start at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 with the featured SCORE Trophy Truck, unlimited Class 1 and other remaining car and truck classes starting at 1:30 p.m.

While the fastest vehicles are expected to complete the course in just under four hours, the time limit for each vehicle to become an official will be either six or seven hours. Many of the limited classes will be required to run two laps while the fastest classes will all be required to cover three laps.

IMPERIAL INFIELD

Run as a three-lap race over a rugged desert race course of approximately 82 miles in length, the colorful course will include a purpose-built eight-mile section off Wheeler Road with specially-built jumps, turns and a table top area in a one square mile area of private land in the center of the race course. This infield area will include the start/finish line, the main pits, the SCORE Operations compound, the primary spectator area with SCOREvision as well as the Monster Energy VIP winner’s circle. There will also be a number of food, beverage and merchandise vendors located in this main spectator area.

TWIN SPECS

While the race course will be closed to spectators because of safety requirements for this massive desert race, a second designated spectator area will be located parallel to a five-mile section of the race course along the south side Evan Hewes Highway (County Hwy S-80). The BLM has advised SCORE that this section on the south side of Evan Hewes Highway will be open for camping during the race.

This second spectator area will also be adjacent to the secondary pits for the race. Along with the start/finish line area off of Wheeler Road, these are the only two spectator areas and both with be overseen as will the rest of the race course by the BLM and local and county police agencies to help insure the safety of everyone involved.

SKED HIGHLIGHTS

As a prelude to the inaugural event, a live drawing will be held for starting positions, by class, on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. PT. It will be streamed live through the SCORE Dirt LiveHD internet show on the SCORE website. For SCORE Trophy Truck and Class 1, the two classes that will have qualifying to determine starting positions, the drawing will identify the qualifying order for each entry.

Not open to the public, activities for what is expected to be one of the largest spectator events in Imperial Valley history will begin with two, one-lap, controlled-speed reconnaissance runs for official entries in the event, one on Wednesday afternoon, April 23 and the other Thursday morning, April 24.

On Thursday afternoon, April 24, starting at 1:30 p.m. PT qualifying will be held for the two top competition classes in the race, SCORE Trophy Truck, the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks, and SCORE Class 1 for unlimited, open-wheel desert race cars.

Starting Thursday, pre and post-race activities for the inaugural SCORE Imperial Valley 250 will be held in and around the Imperial Valley Mall at 3451 South Dogwood Avenue in El Centro.

Public activities will start with a special SCORE parade of race trucks and autograph session on Thursday evening, April 24 starting at 6 p.m. in downtown El Centro.

The colorful SCORE manufacturer’s midway, contingency and safety inspection of all vehicles in the race will be held in the parking area of the Imperial Valley Mall from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Racer and media registration will be held inside the IV Mall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

The post-race awards celebration, also open to the public, will be held on Sunday, April 27 at 10 in the Imperial Valley Mall.

SAFETY FIRST

At the very top of the priority list for this event has been safety for the racers as well as the spectators and the nearly 200 course workers. Starting Tuesday (April 22) the entire area of the race course will be closed to the public by enforcement of the BLM permit for the event.

Race officials have developed the two primary spectator areas both with tremendous site lines of the race course and with ultimate safety in mind. With the added assistance from the area police agencies, race officials are creating a family-friendly spectator environment as well.

To assist the crowd of several thousand expected to attend the race, the SCORE Race Committee has launched its own website at www.IVSCORE250.com with race fans in mind.

The event website also has a reminder list for spectators of the do’s and don’ts for watching the race.

DIRT LIVEHD GLOBAL

With viewers in nearly 150 countries, SCORE Dirt LiveHD will present live internet streaming from the event from pre-green to post-checker. Coverage will include live start and finish line interviews as well as live coverage from the many ancillary events tied to the race. On race day, live satellite tracking of all vehicles in the race will also be broadcast through the SCORE International website.

‘FRIENDS OF SCORE’

The ever-growing group that has become ‘friends of SCORE’ from the area of the race include the BLM-El Centro Field Office, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department, El Centro Police Department, Naval Air Facility El Centro, Emergency Medical Services, De Anza Rescue Unit, Imperial Valley Mall, El Centro Chamber of Commerce, Imperial Irrigation District, the city of El Centro and Imperial County departments of Planning and Public Works, board of supervisors and the county executive officer.

I am grad that they are trying to make this A Friendly family event. But two spectator spots are you kidding me. What happen to finding A nice safe spot on the side of the course away from people and enjoy the event with your family. Instead we get some government wonk telling us to stay in A controlled area packed in with a bunch of people like cattle in A grazing area. I will not be attending. Just my 2 cents.

P.S. Thanks For your service to this Country!

I'm really glad to see score come back to the US with races. Unfortunately desert racing isn't the same anymore after certain events and liability issues now a days. I miss the days of just going out and finding a good place to watch.

I remember I bought a Ford Ranger 4x4 in 1983, and fab'd some suspension, seat mounts, and prepped that bad boy for the races! The best memories were spectating the 1984 Mint 400, when It ran north of Las Vegas. We pre-ran the 100 mile loop in search of the best vantage point, WITHOUT hassle or flack from BLM-anybody. Talk about gnarly silt beds, whoa!
The Arizona side of Parker was also a fun spectacle. (For any of you late comers in the sport ,back then the Parker 400 ran a tightly regulated 100 mile loop in California, and the rest in Az.) Got there late, and pre-ran the loop (100 miles plus a few), and found an awesome spot to watch the race from. When Roesseler came through, my brother and I couln't believe the speed that dude flew at, and how far behind him a rider as good as Danny Ashcraft was! I think he was on a KX 500, and it was WIDE open as he was leaving Osborne's wash!
It's one thing when a driver blows through a stadium area full tilt, with all eyes watching. But, it is completely different when there is no-one to impress, and the top guys are riding at 95%. Back then, there was dominance in the classes. If your name wasn't Rod Hall, or Walker Evans, you weren't jack (unless you're Jack Johnson, driving that badass Nissan class 4!).
I remember Dave Shoppe Winning the class 8 points in '87 or '88, running quad Rancho "Race Series" twin tube emulsion shocks at each corner. He won the championship in what can only be referred to as a "heap"! Before anybody judges me for demeaning Shoppe's ride, I can speak with authority on this one since his is the truck Scott Mc M bought to our shop in '89 when they decided to go truck racing (thanks, Tom Wilson). Hey, did you just hear that? It was the Barney Fife "sniff" of confidence I just wheezed out!! Then came Robby in the hay hauler. ..........If I remember correctly, I believe his second year racing trucks found him paired up with Russ Wernimont. It was the first time a truck won overall, and the rest is history. Yeah, the Good 'ol Days!! You young whipper-snappers best respect us older folk:D!

Now you've done it. You let the cat out of the bag ! Hey, was I as unpopular then as I am now:rolleyes:? Uh-oh, seems like I can hear Dana Carvey's "Grumpy old Man" character chiming in here.........
"When I was your age, we didn't have com-peu-ters and race car software. We modeled our cars using scissors, balsa wood strips, push pins and poster board, and it took 2 or 3 days just to design a 4-link, and the highest tech tool we had was a fax machine, AND WE LiKED IT!!":D
By the way, I consider myself one quarter of R&R, 'cause I'm only half as good as I used to be.....BECAUSE WE'RE OLD FARTS, you and I are Todd. Ha hee!
P.S.
Care to elaborate on those UTV ideas of yours?

hey but no confirmed racers yet?
As of this post, I believe there are fewer than 75 entries total. It's kind of a lot of coin to pay for a little bit of racing, and now SCORE is cutting miles like BITD does. Although it is nice not having to mix it up with the TT's and such, I think that the majority of the desert racers would go the full distance, if offered to do so. If we'd wanted to run sprint races, we could have built a WORCS car!

Yeah we had been planning on pulling the 5/1600 car out to race it. We have done a ton of upgrades (One of a kind rear trailing arms, micro stub hubs, new cv's, custom axles, new front lower arms) and were getting close to being ready. Then we saw the entry fee, cost of tracker, renewing our memberships and fuel. Then since we have not raced the car the last few years, Score wants to re-inspect the chassis, so there's another $275. So when all said & done it was going to cost us around $2700 just to take the green flag. Oh I forgot we took the gear box in for a freshen up and found out we hurt it the last race. So that was $3,000!

Then I call Score and find out we only get 2 laps! WTF! That is not even worth our time. So we pulled the plug on this race. Then as of today there is only 1 car in class registered.

As much as I want this race to be a huge success and the course looks cool, like the old Fud courses. I have a feeling the entries are going to be way under their expectations. Probably enough so they don't do a second year. It would be cool if they made a second course map to look like the old Fudpucker race maps. Heck I would buy one!

Damn! I've got family coming down to watch the race, but if there's not gonna be very many entries, I might tell them it's not gonna be worth the drive! What a bummer!

Even though we are not racing we will still be down there watching. FUD / MDR pulled about 80-100 entry's and that was enough to have a good time watching. It sounds like Score is putting allot of effort in to make this as spectator friendly as they can, even though they have closed the desert and are limiting spectating to two locations.

From a spectator side of this, I think you will see huge crowds and it should be a good time. But from a racers point of view I dont know if this race is going to be worth it. Especially considering the cost, how close it is to the Baja 500, and then for many classes to be limited laps. I'm not so sure! I'm guessing the guys running for Score points will be the majority of who shows up. The teams who are running both BITD & the two big Score Baja races will not be coming to this one.

IMO this race should be the first race of the year for Score. Run it in January and have it be sort of like the replacement to the Laughlin race. Not the same format, but as in Score's first race of the year and being State side. Maybe next year! If there is a next year?

This is a bummer. I had high hopes for this race. I am not sure what it costs to race a UTV but based on the numbers above, it works out to around $17 a mile to race.

Funny. i was quantifying it the same way! The race is still 3 weeks away. There should be at least twice the current entries. It's a points race for SCORE after all, so most all of the guys racing for the championship should be there. Missing out on the 20 points to start a race would put the front runners back at least 5 positions. So plan on at least Vildosola, Tim Herbst, and Rob Mac to show in the TT's. Guarantee you the X guys will be there fighting for their points. C'mon GF. If you don't show, that means I'll only have 3 fans attending:rolleyes:! Although the viewing areas are limited, They are on one of the most exciting parts of the course.
