Robby Gordon Set to Make His in 11th Start in the Dakar Rally

California Native Represents Only American Entry Among 53-Nation Field

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Dec. 30, 2014) – After a full year of work, thousands of miles of testing and countless all-nighters, Robby Gordon and his HST Gordini race car were reunited Monday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in preparation for Sunday’s start of the 2015 Dakar Rally – the world’s most challenging motorsports event.

Over its nearly 30-year history, the Dakar Rally has become the ultimate test of both man and machine, allowing a select few the opportunity to claim victory in the ultimate international sporting challenge and thousands more – vehicles and competitors alike – beaten and broken in pursuit of glory.

Gordon, perhaps one of the greatest off-road champions of all time, knows the frustration and challenges of Dakar more than most. He knows his 11th attempt to become the first American driver to win the overall title remains a massive challenge for his single-car team against the multi-car efforts of operations supported by Mini, Peugeot, Toyota, Renault, Ford and others.

In total 665 vehicles will begin the 2015 Dakar Rally, with Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell among 138 entries in the car class. There are an additional 164 in the motorcycle class, 48 quads and 64 trucks. Fifty-three nations will be represented in the field, with Gordon’s effort being the only entry from the United States.

While racing against factory teams with budgets reportedly as high as $100 million is daunting, one thing the Californian never lacks is confidence.

“Like every year, our objective and our belief is that we can win the overall title,†Gordon said. “We will race against some of the greatest off-road drivers and teams in the world, but if we didn’t believe we could compete we wouldn’t enter the Dakar. More than any other race we have ever entered, the Dakar is about teamwork, organization and execution. We believe we have the experience to win and a team that can execute. It will come down to me as the driver not making mistakes and every person on the team doing their job. This is the ultimate challenge.â€

That challenge consists of crossing 9,111 kilometers (5,661 miles) of desert terrain in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile over 14 days. Gordon is fond of saying that the Dakar Rally is like competing in 13 Daytona 500s or Indianapolis 500s on consecutive days, including rebuilding your car each night.

The team’s best finish came in 2009 when Gordon was third overall. He has accumulated 11 stage victories, including his first attempt in 2005, becoming the first American in history to record a stage win. In his previous 10 starts, Gordon has finished in the top 15 five times, giving the championship driver the confidence required for a race that took last year’s winner Nani Roma more than 50 hours of driving time to complete.

“The Dakar Rally is such a huge race in virtually every country of the world and the United States is catching on fast,†Gordon said. “More than 1 billion people will watch the race on television in 190 countries this year and millions more will be on site in South America. I can only imagine what becoming the first American team to win this race will do for its popularity in the United States. It’s our goal to expose this great challenge to the passionate motorsports fans of the U.S.â€

In 2014 more than 3.9 million spectators lined the course in the most heavily populated areas of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, and the crowd is expected to grow in 2015.

The team’s effort will begin Jan. 3 in front of a massive audience on the steps of “La Casa Rosada,†the presidential palace in Argentina for the annual podium ceremony. If tradition holds, Gordon will again stir the excitement of the crowd by backing his Gordini off the huge podium where the drivers are introduced and literally jump his car into the 2015 Rally just has he would one of his Stadium Super Trucks.

The pomp and circumstance of the Dakar Rally preliminaries will be replaced the next day with the first 833 kilometers of competition through the twisting roads of the Argentinian countryside.

Follow the Dakar Rally through live timing and scoring as well as live updates at planetrobby.com. NBCSN will provide daily highlights beginning Jan. 5 from 4:30 to 5 p.m. ET.

A two-part documentary that aired earlier this month on NBCSN highlighting Gordon’s preparations for the 2015 Dakar Rally – “Robby Gordon Road to Dakar†– is available for viewing on planetrobby.com.

The HST Gordini is supported by SPEED Energy, Toyo Tires, Traxxas, 4 Wheel Parts, Grand Design Recreational Vehicles, Magnaflow Exhaust, Eibach Springs, King Shocks, Mastercraft Safety, Embee Performance, MAC Tools, DeWALT, Freightliner Trucks, Replay XD, Impact by Mastercraft Safety, Lincoln Electric, Torchmate by Lincoln Electric, Ron Davis Racing Products, Techni Waterjet, Hella, Mechanix Wear, Saftey-Kleen, Weddle Industries, Kartek Off-Road, Team Gordon Race Wheels, Pro Am Racing Products, Anaheim Hills Auto Body.

2015 Dakar Rally Stage Summary

Stage 1 – Jan. 4

Buenos Aires to Villa Carlos Paz. 833 kilometers. 663 km Liaison and 170 km Special. The competitors will be rapidly plunged into the heart of the Argentinean countryside. The combination of the route’s different features means there will be something for everyone, while sticking to relatively simple criteria, for the time being. Fast tracks coupled with sharp bends will divide up the vehicles, according to the levels of the drivers' skill.

Stage 2 – Jan. 5

Villa Carlos Paz to San Juan. 625 kilometers. 107 km Liaison and 518 km Special. The longest stage. Any rest will be short-lived, because before reaching San Juan, the competitors will have a particularly busy schedule: quite simply the longest special stage in the rally, which is varied enough to unsettle even the most experienced of drivers. Hard terrain at the start of the race will be followed by dusty sections in the middle of the day and a sandy stretch to finish. This is the first real test, which can only be successfully overcome through constant vigilance.

Stage 3 – Jan. 6

San Juan to Chilecito. 542 kilometers. 258 km Liaison and 284 km Special. The pressure which competitors faced the day before (and late into the night for some of them), will partly ease off on the road to Chilecito. The shorter and less intense stage will allow them to enjoy their majestic surroundings. The red earth tracks, overlooking steep peaks and plunging down into canyons, will take the Dakar through one of the most beautiful regions of Argentina. With thousands of stones to be avoided, it will only take one to ruin this magnificent day.

Stage 4 – Jan. 7

Chilecito to Copiapo. 909 kilometers. 594 km Liaison and 315 km Special. The competitors will have to prove they are worthy of entering Chile! A very early start and a climb to a height of 4,800 meters will precede the border crossing at Paso San Francisco. The really challenging section will begin with a gradual warm-up on the mining tracks, before drivers are faced with the reality of the Atacama Desert. The route here is open and sandy. Over the course of the last 40 kilometers, the giant dunes and basins of Copiapo will have to be tackled and for many this will be at night. Overcoming them will require finesse and instinct.

Stage 5 – Jan. 8

Copiapo to Antofagasta. 697 kilometers. 239 km Liaison and 458 km Special. At the start of the race, the most confident drivers will be able to take advantage of the fast tracks to try to move up in the overall standings. But the temptation to do so may be risky, particularly in the hard-to-handle fesh-fesh areas where absolute self-control is the only guarantee of success. Overtaking here requires precision handling to the extreme.

Stage 6 – Jan.

Antofagasta to Iquique. 647 kilometers. 392 km Liaison and 255 km Special. The route will climb up the Pacific coast towards Iquique and run alongside the coastline. For the first time, the half-way point in the race will be marked on a podium in the center of Iquique. The encounter between drivers and their fans will be emotional, following the earthquake which affected the region at the start of the year.

Stage 7 – Jan. 10

Iquique to Uyuni. 717 kilometers. 396 km Liaison and 321 km Special. Numerous difficulties will mark the first part of the Bolivian marathon stage. From the outset, the long liaison section will mean an early start, followed by a gradual climb to a height of more than 3,500 meters. Once on the high plateau, the special stage will begin, with instructions to follow the roadbook with great care, in light of the large number of junctions on the route. One of the challenges of the day could be wear and tear on tires. Once they have arrived in Uyuni, the competitors will only have completed half of the marathon stage.

Stage 8 – Jan. 11

Uyuni to Iquique. 805 kilometers. 24 km Liaison and 781 km Special. The Dakar bows to the laws of nature. Hence, the weather will decide which route will be taken to leave Bolivia. If it’s dry, the start could take place in the Salar de Uyuni, for a 100km route across a smooth road of white salt: full throttle and foot to the floor. The route then slows down abruptly, with the longest part of the special stage taking place on more technical mountain terrain. The day will end with more than 40km of dunes, concluding with the high descent to Iquique.

Rest Day -- Jan. 12. No competition for the Car division.

Stage 9 – Jan. 13

Iquique to Calama. 539 kilometers. 88 km Liaison and 451 km Special. For this farewell session to the Atacama Desert, the drivers will face approximately 50 kilometers of demanding sand dunes. Despite these challenges the drivers should enjoy the stage because the next stage will put both drivers and their teams into much less comfortable positions. The routes have suffered the rages of time and will be harsh on them: frequent potholes and bumps combined with the narrowness of the tracks will expose their vehicles’ bodywork to damage.

Stage 10 – Jan. 14

Calama to Salta. 860 kilometers. 501 km Liaison and 359 km Special. After the Chile-Argentina border, the day’s special stage will start on the Salinas Grandes, more than 3,600 meters above sea level. The altitude should curb the competitors’ enthusiasm and cool down their engines. The more technical final phase will separate the toughest of them from the rest. For the liaison section, the route will then follow the Paso de l’Acay, at an altitude of 4,970 meters.

Stage 11 – Jan. 15

Salta to Termas de Rio Hondo. 520 kilometers. 326 km Liaison and 194 km Special. The rally will continue on two separate routes, following the famous Ruta 40 and winding through its magnificent landscapes. Drivers won’t have time to relax on these fast routes though: the fatigue which will have accumulated by the 11th day of the race will demand maximum concentration on both the route and the road-book. In the cockpits of the cars, the watchword will also be vigilance; these tracks are often lined with trees.

Stage 12 – Jan. 16

Termas de Rio Hondo to Rosario. 1,024 kilometers. 726 km Liaison and 298 km Special. The Dakar will spend the night near the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit, which regularly hosts the Argentine rounds of the GP and WTCC motorcycle championships. The Dakar's competitors are set for a cross-country journey, battling it out in this tension-packed penultimate day. A combative driver could still shake up the leaders’ positions even at this stage. And drivers who become too distracted could be caught by surprise by the surrounding vegetation.

Stage 13 – Jan. 13

Rosario to Buenos Aires. 393 kilometers. 219 km Liaison and 174 km Special. None of the drivers in the Dakar consider it over until they reach the end of this final day; and for good reason, because every year at least one competitor retires during this final stage. Caution is the name of the game on the fast tracks of the special stage, at the very least for those who haven’t got a position to defend.

In second place after stage 1. Stage 2 is actually about to begin!
He was in third when I first looked but I guess Al-Attiyah was penalized moving Robby up the second.

It's to bad he has had issues once again. It looked like he had the car and team to maybe win it this year.

Mechanical Problems Plague American Robby Gordon in Stage 2 at Dakar
SAN JUAN, Argentina (Jan. 5, 2015) – Following a very successful second-place finish in the opening stage of the 37th Dakar Rally, Robby Gordon suffered early brake problems and additional issues during Monday’s second stage, leaving him significantly behind in his quest to become the first American to win the Dakar Rally.

Although Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell were able to repair the brake troubles that surfaced in the first few kilometers of the race, the Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini was passed by 113 cars on the course during maintenance. The team was able to get back to race speed and overtook many of the competitors until the Gordini came to a rest approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the finish with a yet-unannounced issue.

Gordon was unable to fire the car again, requiring a tow to the bivouac. Despite being towed, he will be able to start the third stage of the Rally on Tuesday provided there are no terminal engine issues.

“Everybody is going to have problems on this Dakar. I've lost 4 hours, but it's only the second day of the race. I'm not done for yet, no way."

Gordon finished Stage 2 in 9 hours, 12 minutes and 26 seconds, far behind the time set by stage winner and overall leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar who drove his Mini to the finish in 5 hours, 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Gordon now finds himself 4 hours, 7 minutes and 36 seconds down to Al-Attiyah overall. He has 11 stages remaining to make up as much of the deficit as possible and to add to his impressive nine career stage victories in his 10-year Dakar career.

Al-Attiyah was 8 minutes and 30 seconds faster than second-place finisher Giniel De Villiers of South Africa, and 10 minutes and 4 seconds better than Bernard Ten Brinke of the Netherlands. Those three drivers hold the overall top three spots in the Rally.

Day 1 leader Orlando Terranova of Argentina slipped to 10th in the overall standings with a 10th-place finish in the stage, 24 minutes and 1 second behind Al-Attiyah.

Tuesday’s third stage (258 kilometers/160 miles) will take drivers from San Juan to Chilecito through one of the most beautiful regions in Argentina, overlooking steep peaks and plunging into deep canyons. Gordon has no other choice but to drive hard and finish among the leaders in hopes of an improved starting position for future stages.

Robby Gordon Rebounds at Dakar in Stage 3

American Team Running Strong Again as the Rally Enters Chile
CHILICETO, Argentina (Jan. 6, 2015) – American driver Robby Gordon successfully rebounded from his mechanical failures on Monday in the 37th Dakar Rally with a solid 15th-place finish in his HST Gordini during Stage 3.

Starting 50th after a troublesome second stage, the Traxxas / Toyo Tires team was able to advance several positions before a punctured tire early in the run. After stopping for a new tire he was able to maneuver around several of the same cars he passed at the start, placing in the top 15 at the finish.

Gordon’s time of 3 hours, 19 minutes and 28 seconds is impressive considering those that finished near Gordon’s starting spot ended up 30 to 45 minutes behind him. Driving aggressively and overtaking 35 cars on Tuesday’s 284-kilometer (176 miles) special puts him in much better company starting Wednesday’s stage, during which the field moves toward the Pacific Ocean and enters Chile for the first time.

Argentina’s Orlando Terranova won the stage in a time of 2 hours, 57 minutes and 28 seconds. South Africa’s Giniel De Villiers followed at 2 hours, 59 minutes and 22 seconds while Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Alrajhi ran the stage in 3 hours and 20 seconds to finish third. Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar finished fifth in the stage, but maintains the overall leader of the Rally.

Only 100 cars started Stage 3, meaning that 37 teams have already fallen from the race due primarily to Tuesday’s marathon stage, which took a tremendous toll on the competitors.

Wednesday’s fourth stage (315 kilometers/196 miles) will take drivers from Chilecito, Argentina, to Copiapó, Chile, and at times will reach elevations of 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), which will challenge not only the drivers, but the cars as well. High altitude mixed with the summer temperatures of the southern hemisphere and the Atacama Desert provides a challenging combination. The final 40 kilometers (25 miles) takes place through the giant sand dunes and basins of Copiapó. Teams will be fortunate to have a good run and finish the entire stage in daylight.

About Copiapó, Chile
Copiapó is located in northern Chile, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the coastal town of Calera. It is the capital city of the Copiapó Province and the Atacama Region. The town is surrounded by the Atacama Desert and receives less than one-half inch of rain annually, making it one of the driest deserts on earth. Copiapó is rich in silver and copper mining, and is unfortunately known to the world as the site of the 2010 mine collapse that trapped 33 miners underground for 69 days.

Correct. The front to rear proportioning valve was incorrect just like the video showed and robby tried to fix it the day before but just didn't get it right.

More Mechanical Issues Strike Robby Gordon at Dakar in Stage 4
COPIAPÓ, Chile (Jan. 7, 2015) – Robby Gordon overcame yet another hurdle in his quest to become the first American to win the 37th Dakar Rally on Wednesday after the Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini suffered additional mechanical issues in Stage 4 and finished 1 hour and 23 minutes off the winning pace.

Gordon started Wednesday’s fourth stage by setting a blistering pace and reaching the first timed waypoint second fastest of the day, just five seconds off the leading car’s pace. Gordon’s day was looking better and Monday’s brake issues of the second stage seemed to be a distant memory.

The positive start for Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell was short-lived as new mechanical problem in the area of the vehicle’s drivetrain struck and caused the team to stop on course and make repairs. Eventually the Gordini regained its fast pace, but with their stoppage they finished the stage 47th, 1 hour and 23 minutes off of the winning pace set by Gordon’s former teammate Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar.

Defending Dakar winner Nani Roma of Spain was 2 minutes and 40 seconds behind Al-Attiyah with Giniel De Villiers of South Africa finishing third, 2 minutes and 57 seconds behind the stage winner.

Al-Attiyah continues to lead the overall Rally with an 8-minute, 15-second lead over De Villiers. Gordon is 5 hours and 47 minutes down to Al-Attiyah and is now scored 39th overall.

Thursday’s fifth stage (697 kilometers/433 miles) will take drivers from Copiapó, Chile, to Antofagasta, Chile. Staying in the Atacama Desert, the first portions of the stage reportedly will be fast, but it’s the field’s first encounter with the dreaded fesh-fesh that will test a driver’s skill and ultimately luck. Fesh-fesh is best described as very fine and powdery sand that has been ground down into dust over millions of years. For a Rally racer, the unavoidable quicksand-like substance can bog a car or motorcycle down to the point of no escape. Undoubtedly some will see their dreams of a Dakar championship will come to an end in fesh-fesh.

Follow the Dakar Rally through live timing and scoring as well as live updates at planetrobby.com. NBCSN will provide daily highlights beginning Jan. 5 from 4:30 to 5 p.m. ET.

Robby Gordon Regains Momentum in Dakar Rally with
Third-Place Finish in Stage 5
ANTOFAGASTA, Chile (Jan. 8, 2015) – After several frustrating days where mechanical issues derailed Robby Gordon’s bid for an overall Dakar Rally win, the American driver ran a great fifth stage in his Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini to finish third, vastly improving his starting position for Friday’s sixth stage.

Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell led through the early part of Thursday’s stage, but between the second and third timed waypoints they lost 11 minutes and 41 seconds to the eventual stage winner and fell back to the 10th position in the process. From that point forward, aggressive driving and perfect navigation allowed Gordon and Campbell to gain 10 minutes and 6 seconds on the leader before the finish.

Russian Vladimir Vasilyev was scored the provisional stage winner with a time of 4 hours, 19 minutes and 18 seconds, and Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Alrajhi followed 20 seconds behind. Gordon’s third-place run was completed in 4 hours, 20 minutes and 43 seconds, and elevates him to 32th in the overall standings. He trails Nasser Al-Attiyah of Saudi Arabia by 5 hours, 45 minutes and 46 seconds.

Gordon’s spot on the podium makes his HST Gordini only the third different constructor to finish among the top-three positions thus far, with Mini and Toyota representing the other manufacturers. Gordon’s car is the only entry among the leaders that is not affiliated with a major automotive manufacturer and was fully developed by Gordon’s company.

“With stage wins in previous Rally events and good runs like today, we prove that we can run with anyone,†Gordon said. “None of our issues this week were really avoidable and they were freak incidents. We’re hopeful that these weird issues are behind us and our plan is to win multiple stages before the end of this year’s Dakar to make our presence known.â€

Friday’s sixth stage will consist of 647 kilometers (402 miles) of which 255 kilometers (158 miles) will be the timed section for the cars. Its relatively short distance will climb up the Pacific coast towards Iquique. For the first time, the halfway point in the race will be marked on a podium in the center of Iquique. The experience between drivers and their fans should be emotional, as a powerful earthquake struck the region and triggered a tsunami in April last year.

Follow the Dakar Rally through live timing and scoring as well as live updates at planetrobby.com. NBCSN will provide daily highlights beginning Jan. 5 from 4:30 to 5 p.m. ET.

Robby Gordon Posts Third Top-Five Finish in Dakar Rally at Stage 6
IQUIQUE, Chile (Jan. 9, 2015) – Robby Gordon continued his good form at the 37th Dakar Rally Friday, bringing his Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini home in fourth place in the 277-kilometer stage.

Like Thursday’s Stage 5 race, Gordon again had a strong early run, leading through the mid-point of the stage. While he maintained the eventual winner’s pace through most of the second half of the race, it was the final timed section on the course – in deep sand dunes – where Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell gave up nearly two minutes to the top-three finishers.

Gordon’s fourth-place finish marked his third top five in six stages of the Rally. He finished the first stage in second position and yesterday’s fifth stage in third.

Overall Rally leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Saudi Arabia won his third stage of the 2015 Dakar Rally and increased his overall lead to 11 minutes, 12 seconds over South African Giniel De Villiers. Gordon moved to 25th overall and sits 5 hours, 47 minutes and 31 seconds behind Al-Attiyah.

Al-Attiyah’s stage time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 18 seconds was 37 seconds better than De Villiers in second, 1 minute, 24 seconds better than Nani Roma in third and 1 minute, 45 seconds ahead of Gordon. Argentine Orlando Terranova was scored fifth, 5 minutes, 48 seconds behind the winner.

Before Friday’s stage, the usual heavy attrition rate had already sidelined 55 of the 137 cars that started the Rally. Making it to Monday’s rest day for the cars will be a challenge as the teams enter a new country with rough terrain and extreme altitude.

Saturday’s Stage 7 is scheduled for a total of 717 kilometers (446 miles), of which 321 kilometers (199 miles) will be the timed section for the cars. Gordon will start in his finishing position of fourth from Friday, which will again be a favorable spot among the elite cars remaining in the Rally. The teams will venture into Bolivia for the first time and right from the start, the cars will gradually climb to more than 3,500 meters (nearly 11,500 feet) where the timed stage will begin.

About Uyuni, Bolivia

The tiny town of Uyuni, Bolivia, (population 10,460) features an extensive street-market and lies at the edge of a large plain at an elevation of 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level. Even larger mountains sit to the east of the city. Given water is scarce, there is little agriculture in Uyuni and the town’s primary industry comes from tourism as the gateway to the world's largest salt flats. Each year Uyuni welcomes approximately 60,000 visitors.

Robby Gordon Records Third Consecutive Top 10 At Dakar Rally
UYUNI, Bolivia (Jan. 10, 2015) – Despite a navigational error at the midpoint of Saturday’s seventh stage of the Dakar Rally, which resulted in a loss of more than nine minutes to eventual stage winner Orlando Terranova, Robby Gordon came home ninth Saturday securing his third consecutive top-10 stage finish of the 37th Dakar Rally.

Like all competitors, Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell left the starting line in Chile with mountains reaching 12,860 feet above sea level and more than 321 kilometers (199 miles) of twisting, turning trails separating them from the finish. Only a road book, handed to teams just hours before the start of each stage, can help competitors find their way to the finish, making navigation as important as mechanical reliability in the Rally.

The Traxxas/Toyo Tires team’s wrong turn was its only setback on an otherwise flawless run. On a day where race organizers predicted many tire failures due to the rocky and rough terrain, Gordon’s Toyo Tires again held up without failure. Gordon hasn’t had a Toyo Tires issue in the Dakar Rally since 2012.

Argentina native Terranova recorded a time of 3 hours, 31 minutes and 18 seconds, a dominating 2 minutes and 20 seconds over second-place finisher Yazeed Alrajhi of Saudi Arabia. Terranova’s win Saturday marked his third 2015 stage victory. The Netherlands Bernhard Ten Brinke finished third.

Gordon’s Stage 7 time of 3 hours, 42 minutes and 6 seconds helped him advance further in the overall standings of the grueling 9,111-kilometer race (5,661 miles), improving his position to 23rd overall. He is now scored 5 hours, 48 minutes and 31 seconds behind overall leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar. All-Attiyah’s lead shrank to only 8 minutes and 14 seconds over Giniel De Villiers of South Africa.

The 13-stage Rally will continue for competitors on Sunday with a return trip from Uyuni, Bolivia, to Iquique, Chile. The route will be very different, however, starting with extremely fast salt flats followed by technical mountainous roads. The course will end with 40 kilometers (25 miles) of soft dunes for the descent from the mountains back into Iquique. The timed section of the stage will be 781 kilometers (485 miles), the longest timed stretch of the Rally.

About Iquique, Chile

The return to Iquique will again provide an unmistakable landscape, created from the contrasts of desert and sea. Regional produce grown along the coast and in the valleys and in the mountains include quinoa, mangoes, Camiña garlic and Pica lemons.
Iquique’s history goes back to pre-colonial times, when its inhabitants worked in agriculture and fishing. The free trade zone, in operation since 1975, transformed the city into a commercial trade center for Mercosur and Asian Pacific countries.

Robby Gordon Loses Time in Stage 8 of Dakar Rally
IQUIQUE, Chile (Jan. 11, 2015) – Robby Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell scored a 43rd-place finish in Sunday’s eighth stage of the 2015 Dakar Rally after taking a conservative approach to the 805-kilometer route due to an oil pressure issue.

For the 76 competitors who started Sunday’s eighth stage of the 2015 Dakar Rally, it was both long and difficult. The 781-kilometer timed section of the stage through salt flats, mountains and soft sand dunes consisted of wide-open racing as well as timed sections in which drivers were required to maintain a pace in compliance with local speed limits.

Gordon and Campbell had already decided to race the stage cautiously in order to prevent strain on equipment and after seeing signs of an oil pressure issue that strategy was of even more importance. Being behind in the overall standings with a single goal of winning stages from now until the end of the Rally, the team could afford to play it safe.

“Unfortunately the engine decided to not give the oil pressure Robby was hoping for and with that it turned into a survival day rather than a race day,†said Campbell. “After the Special (timed section) there was a 250-kilometer ‘neutralization’ followed up by a 38-kilometer sand special, finishing at the bivouac at the bottom of the infamous 3,000-foot Iquique dune. It was management of equipment that mattered today and Robby did a fantastic job at that, and we brought her home safe and sound.â€

Gordon finished the stage 1 hour, 7 minutes and 26 seconds behind winner Yazeed Alrajhi with a time of 4:34:15.

Alrajhi of Saudi Arabia won his first career Dakar stage in this his rookie campaign, beating Orlando Terranova of Argentina by 1 minute, 12 seconds and Nasser Al-Attiyah of Saudi Arabia by 2 minutes, 36 seconds. Al-Attiyah increased his overall lead by eight seconds over Giniel De Villiers of South Africa who finished the stage fourth.

The car division of the Rally will enjoy a rest day Monday before the final five sections of the race, which ends Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The rest day will allow the teams to rest their bodies and make repairs to their cars, which have traveled more than 5,775 punishing kilometers (3,588 miles) since the start of the Rally one week ago. Five stages remain in the Rally which will end Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Gordon Finishes Ninth in Stage 9 at Dakar Rally
CALAMA, Chile (Jan. 13, 2015) – Robby Gordon resumed his racing activities in the 37th Dakar Rally Tuesday after the event’s rest day in Iquique, Chile, and scored a ninth-place finish in Stage 9, which marks his fourth top 10 in the 13-stage competition.

Gordon started among the top 20 of the 76 competitors in the car division for Tuesday’s race after low oil pressure in the previous stage relegated him to a 17th-place finish. The Stage 9 course presented many challenges with dust and complex navigation, but Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell were able to successfully race their way through the timed section and finish 35 minutes and 59 seconds behind winner Nani Roma of Spain – the defending Dakar Rally champion.

Gordon is now scored in the 20th position overall, 7 hours, 22 minutes and 53 seconds behind the leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar. Four stages remain in the world’s most challenging endurance race and Gordon – America’s only Dakar competitor – aims to secure at least one stage victory before the Rally is completed on Saturday.

Al-Attiyah increased his lead margin to 23 minutes and 58 seconds over Giniel De Villiers of South Africa, and 39 minutes and 29 seconds over Yazeed Alrajhi of Saudi Arabia. All remaining competitors in the car division are more than one hour behind Al-Attiyah.

The teams will return to Argentina Wednesday on a long 501-kilometer (311 miles) liaison, followed by a 369-kilometer (229 mile) timed special at high altitude. Along the Chile-Argentina border, the cars will start the race at 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) and will finish the day on a liaison at more than 4,970 meters (16,300 feet). More than one driver became physically ill when the cars last drove at such high altitudes on Saturday.

Wednesday’s race saw the attrition rate of the car class reach 50 percent, with only 71 of the 138 entrants at the starting line. Others are expected to drop out following Stage 10, including defending Dakar Rally champion and Stage 9 winner Nani Roma of Spain who crashed hard just before the midpoint of the stage, barrel rolling his Mini several times.

On Thursday, the cars will race from Salta to Termas de Rio Hondo, Argentina. After a long 326-kilometer (203 miles) liaison, both drivers and navigators will have to have complete concentration on the short 194-kilometer (121 miles) special which will feature fast roads lined with trees.

Robby Gordon Maintains Top-20 Position in the Dakar Rally
Final Stage Scheduled for Saturday
ROSARIO, Argentina (Jan. 16, 2015) – Robby Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell moved closer to completing the 37th Dakar Rally on Friday by finishing ninth in Stage 12 with a time of 3 hours, 9 minutes and 26 seconds.

Gordon’s run on Friday was largely uneventful, which was in question following Thursday’s hard contact with a dirt embankment that temporarily stopped the team’s progress. Following the crash, Gordon and Campbell almost immediately restarted the Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini and completed the stage.

Gordon remains 19th in the overall standings with only one stage remaining as the teams return to Buenos Aires. Argentina’s Orlando Terranova won Friday’s stage with a time of 3 hours, 4 minutes and 6 seconds. Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah holds a lead of more than 35 minutes over South Africa’s Giniel De Villers in the overall standings.

Saturday’s final stage will be shortest of the 13 stages over the 9,111-kilometer (5,661 miles) event. Its 393 kilometers (244 miles), of which only 174 kilometers (108 miles) will be timed, brings every competitor running back to a massive celebration in Argentina’s capital city. Rally officials anticipate several hundred thousand spectators awaiting the drivers' return.

Robby Gordon Wins Final Stage of 2015 Dakar Rally
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Jan. 17, 2015) – Robby Gordon saved his best for last in the 37th Dakar Rally, earning his 10th career stage victory in Saturday’s final race in Buenos Aires.

Gordon dominated Saturday’s event - the shortest stage of the Rally - proving the speed and reliability of the Traxxas/Toyo Tires Gordini that the team knew existed. He and navigator Johnny Campbell crossed the finish line with a time of 13 minutes and 16 seconds, 25 seconds faster than second-place finisher Leeroy Poulter of South Africa. Emiliano Spataro of Argentina finished third, 29 seconds behind Gordon.

The win marks Gordon’s first victory in his HST Gordini – the custom car he developed and manufactured in 2013 specifically for the Dakar Rally. Gordon’s 10 career stage victories make him the most accomplished American driver in the history of the race. His first career stage win in 2005 marked the first time an American driver earned a victory in the world’s most enduring rally race.

Gordon’s overall Dakar Rally time of 48 hours, 20 minutes and 5 seconds was good for 19th place. Only 67 of the original 137 cars that started the Rally on Jan. 4 finished the race. He completed the 2015 Rally with five top-10 finishes, including a second-place finish in the opening stage and a third-place finish in Stage 5.

Mechanical issues during the second and fourth stages placed the team more than five and a half hours down to leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar.

“Some of the things that bit us early in the race really put the mentality of the team behind, but one thing about our team is they don’t stop,” Gordon said. “They worked all night long every night and kept rebuilding the car.

“We learned to not give up and the most important thing is that we know our car is capable. We won the last stage of the Rally and ended the 2015 event on a positive note.”

Al-Attiyah won the overall Dakar Rally Championship with a combined time of 40 hours, 32 minutes and 25 seconds over the more than 9,000 kilometer, 13-day route.

Gordon will return to the United States to finalize preparations for his Speed Energy Stadium Super Trucks Presented by Traxxas inaugural international competition in Adelaide, Australia, Feb. 27-March 1 at the Clipsal 500.

The final stage of the Dakar Rally will be highlighting on the NBCSN recap show at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. Additional information, including a fan forum, can be viewed at www.planetrobby.com.
