The California State Legislature's Budget Conference Committee is meeting today to consider closing more than 200 state parks, including the Oceano Dunes SVRA, aka Pismo Beach (Oceano Dunes SVRA), a popular Central California OHV area and “the only California State Park where vehicles may be driven on the beach.”

For more information and to take action, OHV enthusiasts should visit the California State Parks Foundation’s Save Our State Parks web site at: Save Our State Parks. A link is provided that enables visitors to enter their name and send a message of support for State Parks to both their legislator and the Governor of California.

Take action today!

It would still represent a loss for those OHV users who prefer to camp there and then play at Pismo.

Closing State Parks Not a Real Solution

It should come as no surprise that California’s chronically dysfunctional Legislature, and its year-after-year budget deficits, will radiate pain throughout the state.

After voters trounced lawmakers’ lame efforts to mend the broken budget by floating smoke-and-mirrors ballot propositions, Sacramento has made it abundantly clear that curing budget ills will be accomplished by inflicting deep cuts in some of California’s most important programs and services.

How typical, that slothful members of the Legislature are turning to vulnerable people and services to solve their problems.

School district, mental-health and health-care programs will be eviscerated. If a particular segment of society is too politically weak to fight back, it’s a safe bet lawmakers will zero in on them to carry the budget-deficit load.

And it won’t be just the weak. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office has released a list of 220 state parks that could be shut down. The economic feasibility of that move is questionable, but more about that in a moment.
