Do you like to be able to use the great outdoors to participate in your favorite pastime? If so, it is time for you to get involved in helping to save it for you and future generations to enjoy without the threat of closures. I’m not trying to say you need to send money to join any organization (although they do help fight for all of our rights) or club, I’m saying it is time for more people to step up to the plate and get involved in land use issues.

This can be achieved by simply joining the BRC or any other organization and being a responsible land user. It does not have to involve money unless you want to be a paid member with all the benefits, you can simply sign up to receive the action alert emails and take action on them if you so choose. This act lets you know when important issues or legislation is coming down and your help is needed. You can be part of a group of people that take action to help preserve current and future recreation areas. It might involve sending an email to your Senator or Congressman telling them how you feel about a certain piece of legislation or attending a meeting in your area to voice your concerns. All of which gets you involved without spending a dime. Being a member does allow these organizations’ the funds to help fight legal battles with the overzealous Environmentalists that have become litigation happy about everything. But that is a choice you must make, at the very least signup for the email alerts to get your skin in the game.

Another way to help the sport we all love is to be great stewards of the land we use. This is something everyone can and should be doing. If you see people acting in a way detrimental to our cause by abusing land, not staying on the trail, etc, take the step to politely coach them on the proper etiquette of the trail and the emphasis that their behavior reflects negatively on us as a community. God knows we don’t need the negative publicity. I know what most people are thinking, yeah right like that would work. Maybe not in all situations but in most it does. I thought the same thing when someone first told me, but it does work. Some people might not know any better and a polite encouragement might help them to understand, and yes there are those that will not care either way. Those would be the individuals that should be reported to the authorities before they damage land and or themselves.

I’ve included some links to the organizations’ and people that are trying to help preserve our riding areas, at the very least take a look at them. You might be surprised and find it interesting and want to get involved.

It is your choice, help to fight save the land you and your family enjoy so much, or stay on the sidelines and hope for the best.
