2018 UTV World Championships 1906 DBS Racing Race Report

We were excited to be starting on the front row after a top 6 finish at the Mint. Brayden Baker and Eddie Frisk got staged and ready to go in the 95 degree heat, and then BITD delayed the start for an extra 15 minutes. While waiting in the heat one of our batteries died, so they switched over to battery 2 and they were off the line dead last in the front row. It only took 1 turn to make a pass. Before heading out into the desert Brayden would make 2 more passes and he was up to 6th on the road. Eddie came on the radio, 1906 mile 4 running good, 1906 mile 7 running good, 1906 mile 11 all good. A minute later, “1906 Main, 1906 Race, we have a flat but we are going to keep going to the pit.” We get ready for them in the pit 3 miles ahead, tire out, jack ready, impact ready. Eddie radios in and lets us know it is the right rear tire. I’m thinking oh boy here we go again, we are going to be way back in the pack. They end up pulling into the pit 8th on the road and after 51 seconds and a burn on my arm later they are out with a new right rear ready to make up some ground 11th on the road.

Laps 2 – 5 were good clean laps, moving up a couple of positions. The 1906 was back up to 8th on the road when they radioed in on lap 5 that they were at mile 12 all good and ready to pit for fuel and fill the car for the second half of the race. We filled the car, looked it over and got Brayden and Eddie some cold water and away they went in 51 seconds again and still 8th on the road and somewhere around 10th on corrected time.

It was on Lap 6 when the car first started to struggle. Going up the hills in the 97 degree Laughlin heat caused the car to start overheating, which sent it into limp mode. Brayden would have to stop, turn the car off and wait a few seconds, restart it and go. From Lap 6 through Lap 9, it went into limp mode 7-10 times going up the hills. Finally, Brayden had to just limp up the hills at 40 percent throttle to try and prevent the car from getting too hot and going into limp mode anymore.

When they came around for the end of lap 8 and starting Lap 9 the boys were up to 6th on the road. They were able to make another pass out in the desert and when they radioed in at mile 7 that all was good they were 5th on the road and 5th on time:

“1906 Race to Main”

“Go ahead Eddie”

“We are at Mile 12, the whole right rear arm is broken and its dragging the ground, we are going to try and limp it home for the finish.”

“Okay, you have about 2 miles to go if you can make it.”

“We just passed mile 13, this thing is F’d but we are still trying”

After about 15 minutes of nothing and no car, my phone rings and its Eddie, “Its over, we really tried but finally it just spun us out at the bottom of a hill and the car is stuck”

So close to back to back top 6 finishes but heartbreak 2 miles from the finish was our story in Laughlin. Even though it didn’t turn out like we had hoped, it was a great day and a lot of fun with a lot of good friends and family.
