These are a work in progress, I do not see huge changes but would like your input and advice. I am doing this as a service to you the UTV community, I want a series where you spend more time looking over your hood and less out your mirror. Low entry fees, payback in 2011, and your own course. Read these rules, let me know what you think, and come race with us if you can!

ALL CLASS RULES

These regulations apply to all Formula Desert Lites (hereafter referred to as FDL) classes unless otherwise noted in supplementary regulations. FDL’s intent when mandating specifications for safety equipment for vehicles that will compete under FDL rules is to provide adequate protection to all entrants and spectators.

ACR 1: DRIVERS ATTIRE

SUIT

REQUIRED
1. A manufactured ONE PIECE DRIVING SUIT of fire resistant material that covers the entire body (excluding the head, hands and feet).
2. Suit must have SFI label.

RECOMMENDED
1. Two (2) Layer suit.
2. Nomex undergarment.
3. With single Layer suit wear Nomex undergarment.
4. Leather or fire resistant boots and driving gloves.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Suits with holes, tears, rips, old or worn.
2. Oily greasy suits.
3. Missing manufacturers or SFI label.

HELMET

REQUIRED
1. A Snell Memorial Foundation SA2000, SA2005, M2000 or M2005 approved helmet is required.
2. D rings only on straps.
3. Snell label attached.
4. Legible Snell sticker.

NOT ALLOWED
1. DOT only helmets
2. Snaps on straps.

RECOMMENDED
1. Name, blood type, allergies and pertinent medical information painted on helmet.

EYE PROTECTION

REQUIRED
1. Drivers and co-driver in all vehicles must have eye protection (goggles shields).

NOT ALLOWED
1. Vehicular movement without eye protection.

ACR 2: EMERGENCY SUPPLIES

FIRST AID
REQUIRED
1. A waterproof first aid kit must be on board vehicle at all times. Approved first aid kits will have 9 individual weather proof containers to hold the following items.

(1) 1 – 4 inch bandage compress
(2) 2 – 2 inch bandage compress
(3) 1 – Triangle bandage
(4) 8 – 2 x 3 inch adhesive bandages
(5) 16 – 1 x 3.375 inch adhesive bandages
(6) 10 – Prep pad packets
(7) 1 – Eye dressing packet
(8) 10 Ammonia packets (If available for purchase at time of inspection)
(9) 1 – Ace bandage

FOOD AND WATER

REQUIRED
1. At least one days worth of food and water must be on board vehicle.

SIGNALING DEVICES

REQUIRED
1. Two free standing reflective triangles.
2. Two large glow sticks.
3. One orange flag to be used in the event of being stuck in the course.

RECOMMENDED
1. A battery powered flashing light.

ACR 3: FIRE EXTINGUISHER
REQUIRED
1. Minimum 2.5 pounds “A-B-C†rated hand held fire extinguisher with a gauge.

RECOMMENDED
1. On board fire extinguishing system.

ACR 4: DIP STICK
REQUIRED
1. Where applicable, engine and transmission oil dip stick must be secured into tube by some means.

ACR 5: SHOCK ABSORBERS
REQUIRED
1. All vehicles must start racing with at least one working shock absorber on each wheel.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Active type suspension.


ACR 6: WHEELS AND TIRES
REQUIRED
1. Tight lug nuts secured with at least one full thread showing through the nut.
2. As of the time of the writing of these rules maximum tire size is 30†od.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Wheels with cracks.
2. Worn or damaged lug holes.
3. Closed in lug nuts.

ACR 7: SUSPENSION SYSTEMS, CHASSIS AND RUNNING GEAR
REQUIRED
1. All systems must be secured with lock washers, lock nuts, safety wired or cotter keyed.
2. All bolts secured with a nut must have at least one full thread showing through nut.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Worn or loose parts such as spindles, axle nuts, pivot points, ball joints etc.
2. Active suspension.

ACR 8: STEERING
REQUIRED
1. Safe steering systems with end play at a minimum.
2. All parts wired, keyed or with lock washers.
3. The wheel mounting flange must be welded into the shaft if it is not a stock production shaft.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Any steering system not considered safe by the technical inspector.

ACR 9: BRAKES
REQUIRED
1. Functional brakes on all four corners.
2. Brakes must be able to lock up all four corners.

ALLOWED
1. Turning or steering brakes.

ACR 10: IGNITION SWITCH
REQUIRED
1. A switch enabling the system to be turned on or off within the reach of the driver and plainly marked, IGNITION ON / OFF.

ACR 11: BATTERY
REQUIRED
1. One capable of starting the motor and operating all necessary lighting.
2. Securely mounted with metal tie downs.
3. Batteries mounted in the driver’s compartment must be covered with a case sufficient to hold the entire acid content of the battery in the event of a rollover.

ACR 12: LGHTS
REQUIRED
1. Two taillights
2. Two brake lights.
3. One rearward facing Amber light.

RECOMMENDED
1. Two rearward facing AMBER lights, one flashing, one steady.
2. One rearward facing BLUE light.
3. A minimum of two forward facing driving lights.

ACR 13: STARTER
REQUIRED
1. A starter capable of turning and starting the motor.

ACR 14: FUEL
ALLOWED
1. Service station pump gas.
2. Racing gasoline.
3. Commercial aviation gas.
4. Diesel fuel.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Alcohol, nitrous oxide (NOS) or nitro methane.

ACR 15: FUEL CELL
REQUIRED
1. Stock fuel tanks must be removed.
2. Safety type fuel cell must be used.
3. Safety fuel cells shall consist of a bladder enclosed in a smooth skinned container.
3. Cell container must be made of minimum 20ga. Steel, 0.060-inch aluminum or 0.125 inch marlex.
4. Container must be securely mounted to vehicle with bolts or steel straps.
5. Internal baffling is mandatory in all fuel cells.
6. Bladder construction shall be of nylon or Dacron woven fabric impregnated and coated with a fuel resistant elastomer. Rotary molded cells are acceptable.
7. The physical properties minimum standards are in accordance with the following table.

These physical properties must be maintained throughout all areas of the finished bladder including seams, joints and fittings.

ACR 16: FUEL FILLING SYSTEM
REQUIRED
1. Positive locking cap
2. Design must be of such that there is no loss of fuel in the event of a roll over.
3. A check valve to prevent fuel from leaking if the cap and filler neck are pulled from the cell. The check valve is not required if the filler is located on or within 2 inches of the cell membrane.
4. Fuel filler must be in a location so as not to be disturbed in forward motion or in adverse motion such as an endo or rollover.
5. When filling with fuel it must be directed away from the engine exhaust system and driver of the vehicle by a splash system of any design that accomplishes the purpose.
6. A flexible coupling to the cell must be provided for all fillers attached to the body or frame of the vehicle.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Monza or flip type caps.
2. Vents in the drivers compartment.
3. Glass filters

ACR 17: THROTTLES
REQUIRED
1. Each vehicle must have a hand or foot throttle incorporating positive return springs.
2. A positive stop or over-ride prevention system must be used to keep linkage from passing over center and sticking in an open position.

ACR 18: TRANSMISSION

NOT ALLOWED
1. Automotive type automatic transmissions.
2. Automotive type manual transmissions.

ACR 19: EXHAUST
REQUIRED
1. Forestry approved spark arrestors or approved mufflers.
2. Exhaust system design must be in such a way as to exit to the rear of the occupants, fuel cells and tires.

ACR 20: OIL COOLERS
REQUIRED
1. Installation designed so as to prevent the oil from the cooler or its lines from blowing on the driver or co driver in the event of a failure.

ALLOWED
1. Cooling fans.

ACR 21: ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AND COOLING SYSTEMS
REQUIRED
1. Complete functioning charging system (type open).
2. Complete functioning cooling system (fans open).

ACR 22: ROLL CAGES
REQUIRED
1. Material must be of crew, dom, whr, wcr mild carbon steel or 4130 chromoly. 4130 chromoly is highly recommended for all rollcage construction.
2. Stress relieve all welded intersections by flame annealing.
3. All welds must be of high quality and craftsmanship with good penetration and with no undercutting of parent material.

ROLLCAGE DESIGN
All roll cages must be designed and constructed with one front vertical hoop, one rear vertical hoop, two interconnecting top bars, two rear down braces, one diagonal brace and gussets. The two top interconnecting bars must be placed as far to the outside of the top part of the front and rear hoops as possible. Rear down braces and diagonal brace must have a minimum angle of 30 degrees from vertical. Opened-wheeled vehicles built only wide enough for a single seat are excluded from having the diagonal brace (although the diagonal brace is highly recommended for the single seat vehicles). At the bottom of the diagonal brace there must be a cross member of the same tubing material and dimensions as the hoop. All roll cage components (hoops, braces, gussets, etc.) must have a minimum of 3-inch clearance from the component to the vehicle occupant’s helmets when occupants are seated in their normal riding/driving positions. All portions of the roll bar or bracing that might come into contact with the vehicle occupant’s helmets must be padded.

Cages must be securely mounted to the frame or body. All intersecting points must be gusseted and braced. Cab or body mounted roll cages must be bolted through the body structure and be attached by use of a minimum two 0.1875-inch thick doubler plates (one on each side of body structure). Bolts and nuts must be at least 0.375-inch-diameter s.a.e. Grade 8 or equivalent aircraft quality. Welding of cab or body mounted roll cages to body structure is strictly prohibited. Roll cage terminal ends must be attached to a frame or body member that will support maximum impact and not shear or allow more than 1.5 inches of movement in the cage terminal end.
All vehicles must have at least one side bar on each side of vehicle that will protect occupants from side impact. The side bars must be of the same tubing material and dimensions as the rest of the roll cage. The side bars must be as close to parallel to the ground as possible, be located to provide maximum protection to the occupants, and be securely welded to the front and rear hoops. The location of the sidebars must not cause difficulty in entering or exiting the vehicle.
Gussets constructed of 0.125-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch flat-plate or split, formed and welded corner-tubing, or tubing-gussets made of the same material and thickness as the roll cage may be used. Gussets must be installed at all major intersections, including diagonal and rear down braces, where single weld fractures can affect occupants’ safety.

Race vehicles with a stock roll cage as manufactured (such as the Honda FL350) will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If allowed the cage must in as new condition, NO EXCEPTIONS.

ACR 23: SAFETY HARNESS
REQUIRED
1. Heavy duty five point harness for driver and co-driver/co-rider.
2. Metal to metal connections and fast release buckles.
3. Two 3†shoulder straps and a 3†lap belt plus a minimum of one 2†anti submarine lap belt.
4. Manufacturers name and date of manufacture on a label.
5. Harness material of nylon or Dacron.
6. Clean belts in like new condition and must be replaced after three years of the manufactured date.
7. Adjustment buckles must be at least 1 ½†from the seat to prevent chafing or loosening.

RECOMMENDED
1. Seat belt replacement every year.
2. Sternum straps on shoulder harness.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Y type belts
2. Push button type release.
3. Dirty, stained, frayed or cut belts.
4. Outdated belts.
5. Surplus harnesses.

ATTACHMENTS

REQUIRED
1. Crotch straps as close to the front of the seat as possible so upward movement of the belt is kept to a minimum.
2. Shoulder Harness behind the driver co-driver/co-rider approximately 4†below the top of the shoulders.
3. Lap belts 2 ½†ahead of where the seat and back rest meet.
4. All mountings must be directly to a structural member.
5. Mounting material must be hardened steel bolts at least 5/16†in diameter.
6. Belt hardware must be safety tied or cotter pinned.

ACR 24: SAFETY NETS
REQUIRED
1. Formula Desert Lites approved safety nets are mandatory on all vehicles and must cover the complete open area of the cockpit on both sides of the vehicle.
2. Nets must be installed on the inside of the roll cage to prevent them from being damaged or coming off in the event of a roll over or slide on the side.
3. Nets attached to doorframes are permitted as long as door has a positive secondary latching device.
4. Nets must be installed so that the occupants can release the netting unassisted and exit the vehicle regardless of the position of the vehicle.
5. Net installation must meet with the approval of the chief technical inspector.
6. The net border or edge and the net attachment must be made of materials that are as strong or stronger than the net itself.
7. Net attachments must be every 6 inches. Acceptable attachments are not limited to the following: hose clamps, snaps, heavy-duty nylon ties, lift-a-dot, metal hooks and steel rods. Steel rods are acceptable methods of bottom fastening.
8. The roof must be covered with sheet metal or aluminum.

ACR 25: SEATS
REQUIRED
1. All seats must be securely fastened to a structural member so as to allow no movement up and down, for and aft or side to side.
2. Seat must be manufactured to take the intended abuse of racing.
3. A minimum of four (4) points are to be used in fastening any seat.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Stock type seats, folding seats or racing seats with separate backs.
2. Seats mounted to body or floor.

HEAD AND NECK RESTRAINTS

REQUIRED
1. The seat behind the head and neck area should be padded (at least 2†thick over an approximate 36†square area) with a material of sufficient quality to prevent whiplash.

ALLOWED
1. Head and neck bracket subject to approval of the technical inspector.

ACR 26: DRIVERS COMPARTMENT
REQUIRED
1. The vehicle occupants must be able to enter and exit, unassisted and with great ease, the driving compartment with the vehicle in any position
2. Firewalls and/or bulkheads must separate drivers compartment from any fuel, engine fluids or acids.

ACR 27: DOORS AND LATCHES
REQUIRED
1. All vehicles with operational doors must have positive locking mechanisms and must have a permanently attached positive secondary latching device.

ACR 28: ROOFS
REQUIRED
1. The roof must be covered by sheet metal or aluminum.
2. Must be a minimum of .060†in thickness.

ACR 29: FIRE WALL
REQUIRED
1. An all metal fire wall must separate the driver’s compartment from the engine and any fuel sources.
2. This wall must be fuel tight and extend from shoulder height to the floor and sides of the body.
3. The fire wall must extend at least 1†higher than the top of the fuel cell.

ACR 30: WEIGHT
1. Race ready weight, less driver, but with 20 gallons of gas or a full tank whichever is less.

ACR 31: FLOORBOARDS
REQUIRED
1. Belly pans or floorboards must cover the complete driver’s compartment.
2. If the floor is not part of the body or chassis at least five (5) ¼†bolts per side must be used to fasten it to the structural parts of the vehicle.

ACR 32: BUMPERS
REQUIRED
1. Rear bumper secured to frame constructed of 1 ½†x 0.90†minimum DOM or stronger tubing.
2. Safe front bumper.
3. Ends must be capped and rounded to prevent any sharp edges.

ACR 33: MIRRORS
REQUIRED AND MUST BE FUNCTIONAL

ACR 34: SKID PLATES
REQUIRED
1. Skid plates designed to reasonably protect the front suspension, steering and brake components are recommended on all vehicles. Skid plate must be made of metal and be securely attached.

ACR 35: EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, PARTS etc.
REQUIRED
1. Anything on or in a vehicle must be fastened securely enough so that they will remain attached during competition,

ACR 36: BODY PANELS-DOORS, HOODS & FENDERS
REQUIRED
1. Some type of body panels should be used for driver protection. They should be installed in a manner so as not to interfere with entering or exiting the vehicle.
2. Panels must be installed in a manner so as to remain in place during competition.

ALLOWED
1. Quick release or dzus fasteners.
2. If a UTV type vehicle is used, stock hood, fenders and some type of door panel may be used.

ACR 37: HOSES
REQUIRED
1. Acceptable condition of hoses.
2. Hoses securely clamped and or safety wired.
3. Acceptable protection for any hose passing through the driver’s compartment to protect the driver in case of hose failure.

ACR 38: NUMBERS

ACR 39: ADVERTISING
REQUIRED
1. Good appearance and in good taste.
2. Not to interfere with identification numbers.

ACR 40: RADIOS
RECOMMENDED
1. A working radio able to transmit and receive.
NOT ALLOWED
1. Any race or support vehicle radio equipment is strictly prohibited from interfering with or disrupting race communications on all frequencies allotted to the amateur radio band, public service band, marine band and aircraft band as permitted by FCC rules.

ACR 41: WORKMANSHIP
REQUIRED
1. Good professional appearance.
2. Approval of the technical inspector.

ACR 42: SECONDARY SUSPENSION
ALLOWED
Secondary suspension includes leaf springs, torsion bars, coil-over shocks, air bags, haga balls or any other item, other than shock absorbers and the stock concept suspension system that came with the vehicle, that changes the wheel rate at any point in its travel.
Air shocks will be considered secondary suspension when charged to 200 psi in their fully extended state and the static pressure exceeds 300 psi when fully compressed.
Movable bump stops will be considered secondary suspension when they contact the suspension unit more than 4 inches before the end of the wheels upwards travel.

ACR 43: WHEELBASE
Wheelbase is measured from the center of the hub on the front axle to the center of the rear hub at ride height. If a difference is noted from one side to the other, an average will be used.

ACR 44: TRACK
Track will be considered the distance from the outside of the tires at the furthest points as viewed from the front of the vehicle. Maximum outside track will be measured by passing between the official FDL track device during tech.

NOT ALLOWED
1. Changing of wheels and tires after tech inspection so as to affect track width.




CLASS RULES



FORMULA MOTO
A single or two seat four wheeled vehicle being powered by an engine originating from a production Motorcycle/Snowmobile/ATV/UTV type vehicle (All engines will be reviewed and approved by Formula Desert Lites). The intent of this class is to provide a place for vehicles who do not fit into an existing class structure an opportunity to compete. Drivers will have the opportunity to vote on the legality or fairness of any vehicle that is placed into Formula Moto.
This is an open class and all components will be considered open unless stated in the class rules.

FORMULA 1200

A single or two seat four wheeled vehicle being powered by an engine originating from a production Motorcycle/Snowmobile/ATV/UTV type vehicle (All engines will be reviewed and approved by Formula Desert Lites). 1200cc four stroke maximum displacement. 800cc two stroke maximum displacement.
This is an open class and all components will be considered open unless stated in the class rules.

FORMULA LITE

A single or two seat four wheeled vehicle being powered by an engine originating from a production Motorcycle/Snowmobile/ATV/UTV type vehicle (All engines will be reviewed and approved by Formula Desert Lites). 600cc four stroke maximum displacement. 440cc two stroke maximum displacement. (The 750 weber as found in the redline revolt is allowed, must maintain stock displacement.) FDL retains the right to impose various restrictions to certain power plants if they show a major advantage over another.


This is an open class and all components will be considered open unless stated in the class rules.

STOCK UTV

Vehicles marketed as a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV). FDL at its discretion may segregate makes into sub categories of the stock class, such as STOCK RHINO, STOCK POLARIS RANGER, or alternately an engine size based segregation.
This is a STOCK PRODUCTION category; the vehicle must remain stock except where specific authorization is given in the following class specific rules.


ACR’s
Vehicles shall comply with all ACR’s unless stated in the class rules


SCR1: OCCUPANTS
All entrant vehicles must have a driver and a co-driver in the vehicle for the duration of the race.

SCR2: SUSPENSION
Front and rear suspension components must be stock as delivered from the manufacturer. All suspension mounting points must be in stock location. Strengthening of stock mounting points is allowed.

SCR3: SHOCK ABSORBERS
Front and rear shock absorbers must be stock as delivered on the vehicle and mounted in stock location. Number of shocks must be stock as delivered from the factory. Springs are open as long as they are in stock location and retain stock concept.

SCR4: BUMP STOPS
Original bump stops, or equivalent. No Hydraulic Bump stops.

SCR5: TIRES
Maximum tire size is 30 inches outside diameter.

SCR6: STEERING
All steering components must be stock as delivered from the manufacturer and is safe working order. EXCEPTION…Steering wheel may be of any manufacturer. Quick release hubs may be installed.

SCR7: DRIVE TRAIN
Front and rear differentials and drive axles must be stock and fully functioning.

SCR8: TRANSMISSION
Transmission case and internals must be stock as delivered from the manufacturer. Functioning reverse gear is mandatory.

SCR9: CLUTCHES
Drive pulley must be stock with all stock components. Spring tensions may not be altered. Pulley faces may not be modified. Arms may not be lightened. Driven pulley

must be stock. Spring may be wound to owner’s preference. Belt must be stock size and shape.

SCR 10: BRAKES
Brakes and all associated parts must be stock as delivered from the manufacturer. Brake pads may be of any manufacturer as long as stock concept and mounting methods are retained. No steering brakes allowed.

SCR 11: FRAME
Frame must be stock as delivered from the manufacturer. No modifications allowed other than strengthening and repair. No modification in design or dimensions allowed.

SCR 12: ROLL CAGES:
Roll cage may be stock or built to series specifications as laid out in ACR22 We may mandate other exceptions to this rule as the need arises. All vehicles must have at least one side bar on each side for protection in the event of a side impact. The side bars must be a minimum of 1.5†X 0.90†tubing. The side bars should be mounted as close to parallel to the ground as possible and be located to provide maximum protection for the occupants as possible. The bars shall be securely welded to the front and rear hoops. The location of the side bars must not cause difficulty in entering or exiting the vehicle.

SCR 13: LEG GUARDS
Each vehicle will need to have leg guards installed at a minimum. Door panels are an acceptable alternative as long as doors do not have the ability to be open and closed.

SCR 14: SAFETY NETS
Approved safety nets are required on all vehicles. Nets shall be mounted in accordance with ACR 24. EXCEPTION… Approved arm restraints instead of nets.

SCR 15: SAFETY HARNESS

SCR 16: BATTERIES
Batteries must be securely mounted with metal-to-metal tie downs. All flooded cell batteries must be fully enclosed including the sides and bottom. Enclosure must be able to contain the quantity of acid contained in the battery if inverted. Batteries may not be located in the driver’s compartment. Batteries will be considered as being in the driver’s compartment if there is no firewall between the battery occupants of the vehicle.

SCR 17: LIGHTS
All vehicles must have a minimum of two taillights, two brake lights and two rear facing amber lights; one flashing, one steady.

SCR 18: IGNITION
Must be stock as delivered from the UTV manufacturer.

SCR 19: ENGINE
1. Engine case, crankshaft, rod and main bearings must remain stock as delivered from manufacturer. Engine must be mounted in stock location.

2. Cylinder/Cylinders must be stock. Routine maintenance overbore allowed to factory specifications.

3. Piston/Pistons must be stock. No lightening or skirt modification.

4. Cylinder head and gasket must be stock. Compression must not exceed factory spec.

5. Ignition system must remain stock as delivered from factory.

6. Carburetors or fuel injection system must be stock and use all stock components including manifold

SCR 20: COOLING
Stock cooling systems must be maintained. Auxiliary fans may be added but original radiator must be maintained. No secondary coolers allowed.

SCR 21: EXHAUST
Exhaust system must be stock as delivered from manufacturer. Any pipe that has been cut or re-welded, or seems louder than stock may be deemed illegal and disqualified.

SCR 22: AIR FILTER
Air filter housing must be stock, in stock location. Any filter may be used in stock location.

SCR23 FUEL TANK
Fuel tank, and fuel pump must be stock and in stock location. Stock venting must be changed to a vent tube that follows the 3 sides and down routing system. The end of the fuel tank vent tube must to routed away from the exhaust. Fuel filter is open.

EXCEPTION: if fuel tank is modified it must be in accordance with ACR15

SCR 24: SEATS
Seats may be stock but it is highly recommended that a purpose built racing seat be installed.

SCR 25: FLOORBOARDS
Stock floorboards may be replaced with heavier duty metal or aluminum.

SCR 26: BODY
Stock body components in original position and mounting methods mandatory. Supplemental mounting devices may be added.

SCR 27: WHEELBASE
Must remain stock.

SCR28: TRACK WIDTH
Must remain stock plus or minus two inches.

SCR 29: WHEELS
Any manufacturer wheel may be used. Maximum outside diameter 14â€. Wheel must bolt onto factory stock hub without the aid of adapters, no drilling of hub permitted.

SCR 30: SECONDARY SUSPENSION
Not allowed.

SCR 31: BUMPERS
Stock bumpers shall be retained. Additional nerf bars may be installed.

SUPERSTOCK UTV

The rules for SUPERSTOCK UTV shall be the same as STOCK UTV with the following exceptions.

SSCR1: SUSPENSION
Any suspension kit that is readily available to the general public is allowed as long as it does not require modification to the stock frame, and utilizes the stock mounting locations.

FDL retains the right to disallow any suspension kit or individual part that is found to break the spirit of the rule.

SSCR2: SHOCKS
Any direct bolt on replacement shock, available to the general public that is marketed for use on a UTV.

MODIFIED UTV

This class is intended for highly modified purpose built racing UTV’s based on stock production frame and engine combinations. Maximum displacement at the time of the writing of these rules is 1000cc. Only vehicles marketed as a UTV in the United States of America will be allowed to compete. A detailed list of eligible UTV’s can be obtained by contacting FDL directly.
This is an open production class and all components will be considered open unless stated in these class rules.

ACR’s
Vehicles shall comply with all ACR’s unless stated in the class rules

MCR1: SUSPENSION
All a-arm mounting points must remain the stock design, and remain in the stock location as delivered from the manufacturer, they may be reinforced for strength.

MCR2: TRACK WIDTH
Maximum track width is 74â€

MCR3: WHEELBASE
Maximum wheelbase is 8†over stock as measured from spindle to spindle.

MCR4: SHOCK ABSORBERS
One shock absorber per wheel maximum. Mounting locations may be modified or moved.

MCR5: BUMP STOPS
Solid bump stops only.

MCR6: SPRINGS
The only springing system allowed is a coilover shock.

MCR7: ENGINE
Mod class UTV engines must use stock engine block and head castings. All internal modifications are open. No turbos allowed unless on diesel engines.

MCR8: CHASSIS
Stock chassis is required. Chassis must match body, engine combination. Frame may be strengthened by adding material but basic shape and design must be maintained as well as stock dimensions.

MCR9: TRANSMISSION
Stock transmission and clutch design must be used. Stock rear differential must be used.

The frame shall be either be a stock, modified stock frame or custom built tube chassis. All chassis must retain the stock inner pivot points as that of an existing UTV marketed in the United States.

F1CR4: ENGINE
1000cc max displacement. Must be a four stroke motorcycle engine. Must match body of UTV being used as basis for the vehicle i.e. YAMAHA RHINO BODY with YAMAHA R1 engine and so on.

F1CR5: BODY
Body must be based on an existing UTV marketed in the United States. Flares and vent holes allowed however must retain similar profile as stock body. Body is defined as Hood and Bedsides. FDL retains the right to deem certain bodies as not allowable if they do not meet the spirit of the rule. Body must be in place throughout the duration of the event except for cases of accidental damage.

I would suggest letting swaps like the rotax rhinos in with the regular utvs.This is a atv motor and gives no big advantage as far as hp is concerned.There seem to be alot of them out there and at least one guy is being excluded in all of these races that would be a good addition to racing.

What does a can-am UTV have to do with a Rhino running Rotax power? I know Can-Am uses the Rotax but other series rules do not allow swaps like that. I am considering allowing swaps like the Rotax, but I would prefer if it followed our FORMULA UTV line. So if you run Rotax power in the MOD UTV class, you must run a can am hood and bed sides. If the swaps are allowed, and one vehicle or group of vehicles show too much of an advantage (real advantage, not an imagined advantage), we will look into moving you up a class or some other method of leveling the playing field. If I do allow swaps the motor would be limited to ATV/UTV engines no sport bikes etc. thats for FORMULA UTV.

Trying to increase turn out, that is the purpose of this conversation.Brian is allowed to run in all of local series and nobody is crying about it.I am sure him and alot of people would love to go out and build a new can am race car.Its expensive and takes time.

It does mean that, but in this discussion I stated that "if" I allowed the motor swap in the MOD class, I would like to see it follow the line of our FORMULA UTV class.

I would like to keep some sort of production base to the MOD class. So I am thinking yes to the swaps in MOD, certain restrictions would apply to the motors allowed. I also would like to see an attempt to move the rhino bodied swaps to a CAN AM HOOD AND SIDES by a certain date, as in mid 2011 or an agreed upon time frame. I also would require the frames used to follow the MOD class rules, any deviation would bump you into FORMULA UTV where you are required to have matching body and engine but you can have a full tube chassis as long as the pivot points are from any existing UTV (RHINO FRAME OR PIVOT POINTS and HONDA rc51 HONDA HOOD and BEDSIDES).
